Classes & Courses

Looking for a way to improve your basic skills? Why not sign up for one of our classes?

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

We offer ESOL courses for anyone who’s first language is not English and who is a resident or permanently settled in the UK. Our courses will help you to improve all your English language skills making it easier to:

  • talk to doctors and teachers
  • help your child with homework
  • understand the laws and customs of the UK
  • get employed

Where are the classes?

Our ESOL classrooms are at the Northampton Jesus Centre in the Skills Area. If you are unsure where that is ask the friendly person on reception.

When is the course run?

ESOL classes run during the school term times. For the 2018/2019 academic year our term dates will be:

  • Autumn – Wednesday 5 September – Wednesday 19 December  (Half term 19 October – 29 October)
  • Spring – Thursday 3 January – Friday 5 March (Half term 15 February – 25 February)
  • Summer – Monday 23 April – Friday 19 July  (Half term 24 May – 3 June)

You can enrol on a class at any time during the year.

Our ESOL classes are in the daytime on Tuesday and Wednesday.

  • Tuesday morning classes are from 10:00 – 12 noon.
  • Wednesday morning classes are from 10:30 –  12:30pm
  • Wednesday afternoon classes are from 1:15pm – 3:15pm.

The exact time and day will be dependant on what class you are placed in.

How much does it cost?

ESOL courses cost £20 per half term, which is usually 6/7 weeks. Before you start, you will need to have a short assessment.

This is so we can make sure we place you in a class that is right for you.

Who teaches the course?

The classes are taught by trained ESOL teachers who are supported by teaching assistants. One of our wonderful ESOL Teachers, Sue Withers speaks here of why she enjoys teaching at the Jesus Centre.

Are there any entry requirements?

No, none. You don’t have to be at any certain level we have courses for those at beginner level (pre-entry/entry 1) right up to Level 1. There are no formal entry requirements.
